Nike 001 Shanghai: An Interactive LED Floor and Transparent Screen Basketball Experience

XYGLED built a 66-square-meter interactive LED floor for the Nike 001 flagship store in Shanghai, paired with a transparent LED screen to create a motion-capture basketball court inside the store. Installed at P3.91 with die-cast aluminum cabinets, the floor tracks player movement in real time while the transparent screen adds a synchronized visual layer above the action.

This case study covers the brief, the engineering behind combining a motion-capture floor with a transparent screen, and why this pairing was the right fit for a flagship retail basketball experience.

The Brief: A Basketball Court That Reacts to the Player

Nike 001 is Nike’s flagship retail concept, built around hands-on product experiences rather than traditional shelf displays. For the Shanghai store, the brief was to turn a section of the retail floor into a playable basketball court — one that could track a player’s movement and turn that movement into a real-time visual response, while a transparent screen layered additional graphics into the same space without blocking sightlines to the action.

A standard video floor could display basketball-themed content, but it couldn’t respond to an actual player dribbling, moving, or shooting on it. The store needed motion capture built directly into the floor, working in sync with a screen that visitors could see through rather than around.

The dealership needed a floor surface that could do two things at once. First, it had to support the physical weight and rolling load of full-size vehicles, day after day, without any loss of flatness or panel integrity. Second, it had to function as a visual stage — capable of displaying brand graphics, lighting effects, and product-launch content directly beneath the car.

A static floor could not deliver the second requirement. A fragile display could not survive the first. XYGLED’s brief was to solve for both.

XYGLED delivered a 66m² interactive LED floor at P3.91, built on die-cast aluminum cabinets, integrated with a transparent LED screen so the two displays operate as a single motion-capture basketball experience.

Why die-cast aluminum cabinets

Retail floor displays inside a high-traffic flagship store need to handle constant foot and ball-play impact without warping or losing panel alignment. Die-cast aluminum cabinets give the floor the rigidity and precision fit required for a surface that’s played on daily, while keeping the structure light enough for standard retail-floor installation.

Why P3.91 pixel pitch

Players and visitors interact with the court from very close range, so the display needed fine enough resolution to render sharp motion graphics, ball trails, and score effects underfoot. P3.91 delivers that clarity while remaining practical for a 66m² retail installation.

Why pair a transparent screen with the floor

The transparent LED screen sits above or alongside the court, adding a second visual layer — such as score displays, brand graphics, or effects — without creating a solid barrier that would block views into the activation. This keeps the basketball court visible and inviting from across the store, rather than hidden behind an opaque screen.

Why motion-capture interactivity

The floor uses motion-capture sensing to detect player position and movement in real time, translating physical basketball actions into on-floor visual effects. This is what turns the installation from a video display into an actual playable experience — the content responds to the player, not the other way around.

  • Brand-specific lighting and color washes frame the vehicle from below and around it.
  • Launch graphics and model information can run on the surrounding floor area while the car remains stationary.
  • The display can be reprogrammed for each new vehicle rotation, so the showroom stage changes with every launch without any physical rebuild.

This turns a fixed showroom footprint into a flexible presentation space — the car changes, and the stage changes with it.

How the Experience Works

A visitor steps onto the court and the floor begins tracking their movement. As they dribble, move, or take a shot, the interactive floor triggers synchronized visual effects — ball trails, impact rings, or score-related graphics — directly beneath their feet. At the same time, the transparent screen layers in complementary content, so the experience reads as one connected activation rather than two separate screens running independently. For a flagship store built around hands-on brand experience, this turns basketball itself into the store’s central attraction.

Why XYGLED for This Project

Combining an interactive motion-capture floor with a transparent screen requires the two systems to be synchronized at the content level, not just installed side by side. XYGLED’s production capabilities cover both interactive floor engineering and transparent display technology, which made it possible to deliver the basketball court as one integrated system rather than two independently sourced products for this flagship retail environment.
